Le programme de MSc de 2 ans propose un programme de cours intensif suivi d'un projet de recherche encadré par des chercheurs de renommée mondiale en maladies infectieuses à l'Université de Stellenbosch.
The MSc program includes a 9-month lecture block, including a compulsory Statistics and Bioinformatics module, followed by capita selecta modules for Infectious Disease or Pathogen Genomics. The capita selecta model allows for flexibility and introduction of new focused topics should the need arise. Following the lecture block, trainees are embedded within the SU host laboratory for the remaining of the program, > 1 year, where they will carry out a bioinformatics research project.
The program incorporates career development activities for trainees. The program aims to produce MSc graduates equipped with bioinformatics and research skills to position them as future innovators and leaders in infectious disease research. Customized workshops (based on needs assessment with LMIC partners) are also offered to strengthen research, supervisory and mentoring capacity. This will help empower LMIC faculty and create an enabling environment, to encourage trainees to return to their home institutions and develop and retain regional capacit
Pour garantir la durabilité et le succès des initiatives de renforcement des capacités, le programme de bourses African STARS inclure plusieurs mécanismes de mentorat et de soutien pour les boursiers ATT, YPP, MBA et Exchange. Nous considérons qu’un solide plan de mentorat est au cœur d’un programme de formation réussi. En conséquence, chaque boursier aura au moins deux co-mentors, l’un basé dans leur institution d’accueil et l’autre dans les institutions partenaires de mise en œuvre. Le comité de formation facilitera l’appariement de chaque boursier avec des mentors appropriés. Le mentor de l’institution d’accueil guidera le boursier dans la sélection initiale d’un projet en fonction des besoins locaux. En fonction du projet et du site de formation, le boursier sera ensuite jumelé à un co-mentor et une proposition de recherche écrite sera élaborée conjointement avec le boursier et les deux mentors. Bien que chaque boursier ait au minimum deux mentors, ils seront encouragés à solliciter d’autres mentors informels en fonction de l’expertise requise pour leur formation. De plus, nous tirerons parti du mentorat virtuel, si nécessaire, en ajoutant des mentors issus d’institutions internationales collaboratrices. Ainsi, les boursiers bénéficieront d’un mentorat pratique, offrant orientation et soutien depuis la conception du projet jusqu’à son achèvement.
Overview of selection process:
- Scholarship application deadline: 26 June 2025
- Short-listed students will be invited for an interview by a panel of Supervisors at Stellenbosch University: August 2025.
- Simultaneously short-listed students are invited to apply to Stellenbosch for admission to the program and linked with possible supervisors: August 2025.
- Closing dates for applications to MSc program: 31 August (International), 30 September (South Africans)
- List of successful and reserve candidates finalised – September 2025.
- The final outcome of scholarship is made available in October 2025 to allow students to sign their MOU; need an SU admission letter to sign agreement.
